Motsepe Foundation Championship leaders Durban City made much needed ground in their pursuit of automatic promotion to the PSL following their 2-1 win against Hungry Lions at the Mxolisi Dicky Jacobs Stadium in Upington on Saturday afternoon.

Sitting at the top of South Africa’s first division, Durban City returned to the winning column during matchday 20 following their 2-1 defeat to Baroka on 22 February.

Orbit College, who entered this weekend’s fixture list in second place, could only manage a 0-0 draw against Venda Football Academy in their latest league assignment on Saturday.

As it stands, Orbit trail Durban City by six points and are winless in their last two Motsepe Foundation Championship fixtures.

Also, third-placed JDR Stars were unable to capitalise on Orbit College’s draw following their 2-2 stalemate against Black Leopards at the Thohoyandou Stadium in Limpopo on Sunday.

JDR Stars clawed their way back in the second half to level terms after conceding two goals in the first 45.

Elsewhere, Cape Town Spurs ended their four-match winless streak in the league with a 2-1 win against Highbury at the Athlone Stadium this weekend.

The Urban Warriors thus moved up to 14th on the log, two points ahead of Venda Football Academy following their 0-0 stalemate in Rustenburg.

Following their much needed win, Spurs have now accumulated 19 points after 20 matches played.
