Mamelodi Sundowns continue to break records
Mamelodi Sundowns earned an eight consecutive Betway Premiership title in the 2024-25 season and rounded off their campaign with a 2-0 victory over Magesi FC on Sunday.
They have completed their shortened 28-game programme, but despite having two games less this campaign, managed to match break several Premier Soccer League records.
MOST POINTS IN A 30-GAME SEASON
Sundowns secured 73 points this season, matching their own record for a 30-game campaign that they set in 2024-25. This time it was achieved with two games less and you would have put good money on them to break the all-time record given a chance. That stands at 75, a record Sundowns jointly hold with Kaizer Chiefs from the 1998/99 campaign that had 34 matches per team. Given that they got three points from a game against Royal AM that was later annulled, you could say they did break the record … it will just not be recognised.
MOST TITLE WINS IN A ROW AND MOST OVERALL
Sundowns’ victory this campaign is a record eighth title in a row and 18th overall, with the next highest on the list Kaizer Chiefs with 13 championships.
MOST WINS IN A SEASON
The victory over Magesi FC was a 24th of the season for Sundowns, a new PSL record for any PSL season. Remarkable that they managed it in only 28 games (D1 L3). They had previously held the record of 23 jointly with Chiefs (1998/99) and Manning Rangers (1996/97).
MOST HOME WINS IN A 30-GAME SEASON
Another mark new mark set by Sundowns this season as the win over Magesi FC was their 14th of the campaign. The previous best mark in a 30-game season was 12, achieved by BidVest Wits (2016/17), Sundowns (2015/16 & 2022/23) and Ajax Cape Town (2010/11). Sundowns are also the only club to have a 100 per cent record at home with 14 wins from 14 games.
MOST GOALS IN A 30-GAME SEASON
The top mark in a 30-game campaign was the 56 goals Sundowns netted in 2021/22, but they smashed that this term with 65 from 28 games. The overall PSL record is held by Chiefs with the 73 goals they scored in 34 games in the 1998/99 season. That is an average of 2.15 goals per game, while this season they have managed 2.32 goals per game, a better rate.
BEST GOAL-DIFFERENCE
Sundowns set a new mark for best goal-difference in 2023/24 with +41, topping their previous record set the season before by +2. But they topped that again this season with +52 (65 goals for, 13 against).
