Pitso Mosimane has never been one to follow the beaten path. From his early coaching days in South Africa to conquering the continent with Mamelodi Sundowns and Al Ahly, his journey has been defined by ambition, resilience, and an unwavering belief in African football’s potential.

Now, as he continues to shape the next generation, Mosimane remains a visionary—one who sees beyond the immediate victories and into the legacy he hopes to leave behind.

In a recent Champion Chats interview with Thato Moeng of SuperSport, Mosimane reflected on his coaching philosophy, his experiences at Esteghlal FC, and his commitment to youth development. His tenure in Iran may have been brief, but it was a chapter that reinforced his belief in the importance of structure, investment, and long-term vision in football.

“A coach succeeds when given the right environment,” he stated, emphasizing that success is not just about tactics but about building a culture of excellence.

Beyond the touchline, Mosimane’s influence extends into education and mentorship. His Pitso Mosimane Soccer Schools are more than just training grounds—they are incubators for young talent, instilling discipline, teamwork, and a deep understanding of the game. “It’s about more than football,” he explained. “We teach life skills, nutrition, and leadership. We want these kids to grow into complete athletes and responsible individuals”.

His impact has not gone unnoticed. Recently, Mosimane was honoured with the Game-Changer Award at the 2025 Business Council Gala, a recognition of his contributions to football and leadership beyond the pitch. “To be acknowledged alongside legends like Dr. John Kani is humbling,” he shared. “Football is my passion, but my mission is to shift mindsets, open doors, and leave a legacy for the next generation”.

As African football continues to rise on the global stage, Mosimane remains at the forefront, pushing boundaries and challenging perceptions. Whether in the dugout or in the classroom, his influence is undeniable. He is not just a coach—he is an architect, shaping the future of the game with every decision, every lesson, and every dream he inspires.

HOW HE GOT INVOLVED IN FOOTBALL

Football comes from the family background. Mosimane's mother was born in Phefeni, Soweto, and his uncles played for Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs, even playing against each other at some stage. His grandmother was a football enthusiast, and Mosimane grew up surrounded by Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs jerseys. His father, who Mosimane recalls as a coach, introduced him to the stadium experience.

During his high school years, Mosimane began taking football seriously. At that time, Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs were recruiting players from schools due to the absence of development academies. Mosimane was discovered playing school football by Jomo Sono and Bra Screamer (Stanley Tshabalala).

LESSONS LEARNED AS A PLAYER

Mosimane emphasizes the importance of education alongside sports. His mother's advice was clear: “Your life after football is longer than your life in football!” He believes that academics and sports cannot be separated, a lesson he shares with players today.

Mosimane recalls his debut against Orlando Pirates at the old Orlando Stadium as a significant moment. Other highlights include his first game in Europe, scoring his first goal abroad, and his debut for Bafana Bafana, where he scored on his debut.

TRANSITION TO COACHING

Mosimane became a head coach accidentally, inspired by his interest in tactics and strength and conditioning. He acknowledges that his post-playing career as a coach brought him greater recognition than his playing days.

The Pitso Mosimane Soccer Schools focus on scouting players from schools, starting at age five. Mosimane's research revealed that successful football academies like Barcelona and Ajax Amsterdam prioritize early development at the grassroots level.

Mosimane coaches the human being first, believing that talent will flourish when the person is nurtured. He values trust and relationships with players, emphasizing the importance of understanding the will to win and supporting talent to reach the next level.

Mosimane highlights his tenure at Al Ahly as the pinnacle of his career, winning the Champions League multiple times and earning a bronze medal in the Club World Cup.
