999 not out for coach Gavin Hunt
SuperSport United coach Gavin Hunt will take charge of his 999th game in the top flight of South African football on Tuesday when his side meet Kaizer Chiefs away at Soccer City in the Betway Premiership.
Hunt has been a permanent figure on the bench in the Premier Soccer League since taking Seven Stars to promotion in 1998.
This is his 27th successive season as a coach in the PSL.
Hunt has won four championships in his time at SuperSport United and Bidvest Wits and also trophies at Moroka Swallows. He also coached Black Leopards, Chippa United, Hellenic and Kaizer Chiefs.
This season has been a disappointing one by his previous high standards with six wins and 10 losses in 21 games in charge but his overall record still makes for impressive reading with 415 wins in 998 games, 287 draws and 296 losses. His teams have scored 1287 goals.
The 60-year-old played for more than a decade in the colours of Hellenic and Cape Town Spurs and in the later years of his playing career began coaching schools’ teams.
His 1000th game will be at home to Lamontville Golden Arrows in Atteridgeville on Sunday. The previous record for the most number of games as a coach was 816 and held by Gordon Igesund.
